russcon.org exists! Thanks PJ for the domain name administration assistance! Right now it just serves as a synonym for the familiar russcon.place.org. But I figured it was about time I acquired the russcon.org domain name. Sometime I plan to do some major reorganization to my website, now that I'm learning a lot about XML and XSL at work. Fun stuff.

If you are interested in opposing a war with Iraq, there is a march & rally Saturday (gather at 2pm at Republic Square Park, 5th and Guadalupe); more info at http://austinagainstwar.org/.

Lots of work this week is delaying hammering out the details on my second programming/testing challenge, but it is on the way sometime relatively soon.

Another fun Puerto Rico game, and this time I didn't suck totally!

Earthquake is a fun little card game that plays quickly, so we played 4 games in a row. It's fast and fun with a clever mechanic.

Meta Game

RussD was the Meta Devil. Here is the Meta Game he mailed out:
Too many people show up every week and lamely decline to play the metagame. This metagame is dedicated to those lamers, er, I mean non-players. This time, either bring or when you show up write on a piece of the abundant scratch paper a reason why you either hate or like the metagame (the metagame as a concept, that is, not this particular metagame.) At 10PM, we'll have a simple majority-wins vote for the "best" reason among the reasons to hate the metagame. Everyone present gets to vote, and use whatever criteria pleases you to determine the best. Whoever wins the "hate" vote is then the metadevil and inherits the metadevil tile and gains the admiration of all present. Then he reads through the reasons for liking the metagame and picks the one he thinks is best. Whoever wrote that reason is the metadevil for next week.
Two different lazy lamers said they hate the Meta Game because it is too much effort, but there were also some other amusing reasons to hate the Meta Game, such as all the clueless idiots who walk in and ask "What's the Meta Game tonite?" The most popular reason by far was Dan's:
The Meta game is bad because it has made me its bitch.
So Dan took over as the evening's Meta Devil briefly (during which time he took the opportunity to deface William's lovingly constructed plaque from last week) and picked his favorite reason for liking the Meta Game, which was JP's:
I love the Metagame b/c so many people hate it.
So JP is next week's Meta Devil and will design the next Meta Game!

Evening's Soundtrack

Clandestine, Music from Home
The Geraldine Fibbers, Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home
Hole, B Girl
Prospero's Books, Music from the Film
Bobby Horton, Homespun Songs of the C.S.A. Volume 1

Music which some RussCon people have told me they like and others have told me they hate.

JP is the Devil by a landslide. Then the Marks are Co-Vice-Devils. Then Steve.

Rithmomachia: The Game for Medieval Geeks

I read some posts by Rebecca Mercuri on comp.risks, and she has interesting stuff to say about voting, especially in light of recent Florida election problems. My old Black Freighter cohort Brendan works for a slot machine company now, and I've learned that gambling devices are regulated and inspected much more rigorously than voting devices! (E.g. voting device companies don't even have to reveal their source code to any inspection, claiming proprietary secrets!)
