brad smith's postcard Thanks to Brad Smith for sending a postcard from faraway New Zealand, complete with New Zealand LOTR stamps!

This postcard has Gandalf and Saruman (40c), The Lady Galadriel (80c), and Sam and Frodo (90c).

There are 3 other stamps available as well, but they're more costly: The Guardian of Rivendell ($1.30), Strider ($1.50), and Boromir ($2.00).

New Zealand rules! We hope you are settling in well, Brad!

This Sunday May 12, I'll host gaming from 1:00 pm onward as long as we go... school's out, Whendy's having a birthday, it's Mother's Day... all traditional signs of boardgaming. Uh yeah.

Meanwhile there is 1 more free Tuesday night silent film at Alamo Drafthouse.

DaveB has removed his box of games for sale, so if anyone wanted any, contact him directly!

I enjoyed my first game of Titicaca quite a bit, despite RussD's bitter denouncement of it last week. I think our game went quicker, and we had a better understanding of the rules. It's definitely a game where strategy is nonobvious and who's doing well is unclear, at least for us newbies. The random map setup looks like it will give tremendous replay value as each game could play out quite differently depending on where the "5" and "10" (scoring) lakes are. I definitely want to play more Titicaca. JimG felt the tie-breaking mechanism (for the simultaneous "in the fist" auctions) added too much luck, but I didn't get that feeling.

Believe it or not, this was my first time to play Lord of the Rings. We got torn to bits in Shelob's Lair.

The surprise hit of the evening was Star Wars Epic Duels. This wacky Milton Bradley game turns out to be quite fun. Admittedly this is largely due to the fact that we all know the Star Wars mythos, so there was wonderfully silly fun table talk. The rules are simple, the gameplay reasonably quick (if people don't agonize of course), and there's high toy value with the painted figures of all your favorite Star Wars characters. (Queen Amidala had a bare midriff outfit that we hope will show up in the new movie.) We played 2 games with teams of good guys vs bad guys. It might be fun to try a free for all as well. Definitely need to play more of this. It's good fun.

Meta Party Game

Marty was the Meta Devil. Here is the Meta Party Game he mailed out:
The Meta Game this week is based on playing games that have tie-ins to TV, media, and films. So, a game with that contains a movie or TV show name counts. For example, The Lord of the Rings boardgame counts, as does the game Andromeda (there's a sci-fi TV show called Andromeda although the game has nothing to do with the TV show). Of course, cheesy games from bad TV shows count. Also games about making movies count, like Traumfabrik or Showmanager. Any Star Wars based game counts, etc. Each game played gets 1 meta point. Most meta points wins. Lord of the Rings games win ties, followed by Star Wars games, just 'cuz I'm biased. ;)

Marty left before the evening was over, so I emailed him the data to determine a winner, noting the games which had been marked meta in The Book (Star Wars Epic Duels, Traumfabrik, Poker, Lord of the Rings) and I pointed out:

Apparently there are movies called Poker:
http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=poker&restrict=Movies+and+TV
Also I note there is a movie called Lake Titicaca:
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0048282
And many called Bluff:
http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=bluff&restrict=Movies+and+TV
And one called The Flea Circus:
http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=flea+circus&restrict=Movies+and+TV
And Raj:
http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=Raj&restrict=Movies+and+TV
He pointed out "Don't forget about _Can't Stop the Music_", and computed the scores:
Russ, you are the Meta winner.

William 5
RussW 7
Steve 3
Marty 5
Whendy 4
Mark Y 5
Dan 5
Clay 2
Ben 3
JimG 3
Matt 5
JP 4
and maybe a couple of others, but you are the clear winner.

Woohoo! I'd like to thank the Academy, and all the RussCon gamers who made it possible. I will design next week's Meta Game!

Jesus Christ Superstar
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Henry Purcell, Dido and Aeneas
