Thanks to Whendy for the clever and tasty birthday carrot cake which was decorated as a go game! I should have got a picture of it, but it was eaten too quickly. :)

By odd coincidence, there was lots of other weird food brought as well, including some unnaturally pink Asian candy, some upscale French chocolate wafer thingies, but my favorite weird foods (hard to pick a winner) were:
autoland
  • Men's Pocky: "Crispy pretzel dipped in dark chocolate for the type of person who enjoys the finer points in life." (courtesy of Dan)
  • Autoland Printed Biscuits. These little cookie cracker things have pictures and captions of various vehicles apparently inkjet printed on them! During Union Pacific, we drew biscuits to find what our individual Spirit Vehicle was. (courtesy of William)
  • Crispy Grain Sea Biscuit! They look like synthetic cleaning sponges, and smell like fish food! We wondered why it smelled fishy; the only unusual ingredient was laver, which I looked up and found is a seaweed. Sadly Sea Biscuit wasn't here to enjoy them, but don't worry, there are plenty left over! (courtesy of Dan)

Clandestine plays Cactus Cafe Friday February 1, a few days before my birthday but an excellent birthday event nonetheless, since they are surely the greatest of all live bands, and I obsessively go hear them every time they come to Austin. Last week's Report has details.

If I didn't know better, I'd think people let me win both games of Carcassonne.

Daniel's spirit vehicle was a train, and he won Union Pacific. Coincidence? Or proof that unseen ectoplasmic forces influence our lives? You be the judge.

I was pleased to play 2 of my favorite decapitation games.

Meta Party Game

I was the Meta Devil. Unfortunately I dropped the ball on this one and didn't email out a Meta Game. I came up with a game in honor of my impending birthday: Earn a meta point each time you play a game in which 40 is mentioned as significant in the rules. E.g. in the Trainsport games, you start with $40. But I didn't explain this very clearly. :) People marked Metro and Samarkand as Meta in the book just because they have 40 printed on the scoretrack (but there's nothing special about 40), but hey, they tried, so what the hell, I'll count it that way. Thus the only meta points earned were for those 2 games, and the meta scores are:

2 points: MarkY RussD Zack
1 point: Brady Jeffles Dan

The 3-way tie for first is broken randomly by my magic die from the original TSR Dungeon boardgame, and the winner is MarkY! So MarkY will design next week's Meta Party Game! Woohoo! And I know he'll be here next week since he said he wants to learn Carcassonne. :)

Jeffles is clearly the Devil. Clayton pulled a Brady Maneuver. William and Daniel are Co-Vice-Devils. Then Steve. Dan wins the Dedicated Award.

By the way, I think I'm getting close to formulating an overhaul to the ratings system. Just so you know.
