Devil Clayton missed his chance to play Iron Dragon, since he didn't bring any of those yucky Mayfair crayon games.

There shall be bowling tomorrow night (Friday December 1) as this week's meta party game.

Thanks to Carly for hosting gaming last Saturday. Because of that I stayed up till 6am with Squeaky playing Wizard Kings, the great new fantasy wargame from Columbia Games. I shall be playing more of this. Hopefully with Jeffles, so that he'll buy the expansion sets. What a nostalgia blast to play an hours-long wargame again. Woohoo!

There was hot betting action as Jeffles & JP each bet $10 to Matt & PJ concerning whether an attack from a mountain through a sea province received an astronomy bonus. JP researched and found the official errata & clarifications at the company website while the game continued. Such bets would have taken weeks to resolve in the past, but thanks to the internet the money can change hands in minutes. Turns out Jeffles & JP lost the bet. The bonus does not apply.

Our Most Assiduous Reader JeffF wrote to remind me of the details of Web of Power tiebreaking. The tiebreaker is number of pieces. We theorize that the players last week didn't know that.

JP finally remembered to bring his Battle Cry set. You know, the prize set he won at MillenniumCon, which Brady painted all the miniatures of? It's great looking, and now we need to play it! I would have, except I was too distracted having my brain devoured by Carcassonne.

carcassonneThe new game that's taking RussCon by storm is Carcassonne. I love this game! Thanks to both Dan & Brady for bringing copies. Several of us played it repeatedly; indeed, I played 4 games of it and nothing else!

Cartagena is a neat-o little game of bands of pirates escaping a prison and racing along a path to reach a boat, with nifty geomorphic map tiles. The theme is suspiciously reminiscent of Ausbrecher AG, a game of convicts escaping a prison and racing along a path to reach a boat, which RussCon's first international visitor Andy brought 2 years ago. Anyone remember that one?

What's That On My Head? is the kind of game that makes me wish I had a camera to take a picture of the people with their wacky headgear and cards on their foreheads.

Dan is the first from RussCon to get the English edition of Lord of the Rings, so it got played. As you may know, it's a cooperative game, not competitive, so it's all the human players versus Sauron. It was not entirely clear whether it was suitable for ratings recording (since all players by definition win or lose together, with no individual rankings). But they decided to record it as a team game (humans versus the game itself, represented by Sauron), and so there you have it.

Meta Party Game Results

I was the Meta Party Devil. Here is the meta party game I emailed out:

Tonight's meta party game is bowling, and it's so very meta that it doesn't take place tonight, but instead this Friday night (Dec 1). Whoever gets the best average score (lowest [ed. note: obviously this should be "highest"] arithmetic mean of scores from all your games played, for you nitpickers) is the meta party devil next week. We're starting at 7:00pm at the bowling alley whose name eludes me in the strip center at the southeast corner of Burnet and Research/183. You know the one I mean. Oh, yes, you do. Don't give me that look.

Bonus points for singing Camper van Beethoven's "Take the skinheads bowling, take them bowling!" Well, not really, but it would still be cool if you sang it.

Since the game is not over yet, I don't know who won! If you want to participate, we'll see you there at 7pm tomorrow night (Friday)! Yes, this conflicts with Great Hall gaming, so at least do one or the other! Further info about the bowling venue may be found here.

PJ is the Devil! JP is Vice-Devil! Matt is Vice-Vice-Devil! Then RussD & Clayton. Jerrie is the Generous Angel. Most unusually, there were 2 Extra Average Awards this week, to Sauron and Steve. I never would have pegged Steve & Sauron both as Extra Average, but hey, the numbers don't lie.
