Happy Birthday to RussD! And Happy Juneteenth.

Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress was cool.

Lost and found: There's a gray sweatshirt/jacket that's been left on my stair bannister for weeks. And some black plastic/metal bicycle tool thingamajig.

If I know you in real life and you have a web page you'd like listed on my page of links to friends, let me know.

Atomic Chess is a chess variant Dudley knew about; if I heard right, it's like regular chess except that when a piece is captured, it explodes, destroying all the pieces in a 1-square radius. If that's not what it is, then my game sounds fun too. :) I wonder if Dudley introduced it tonight since it starts with the letter A...

Meanwhile, Brady brought additional characters for Star Wars Epic Duels, which he designed and made cards for. Apparently Jar Jar Binks was one of the new primary characters, and I pity whatever player is stuck with him, since Jar Jar only has the Power to Annoy.

Pictionary was good for a brief change of pace, but it reminded why I don't play "social" or "party" games much.

The Cathedral game was a comedy of errors, as in the first game of the match I made 2 stupid blunders in a row, ending with 6 points against me, but in the second game, Steve made a single huge blunder letting me capture one of his large pieces, so I ended up winning anyway.

Perhaps it would be mean to also thank Steve for playing 7A in Acquire... I'd been in last place till then. :) On the other hand, Steve spanked me and Alex in a very unusual game of Zirkus Flohcati in which Alex and I both brought out 5 triples, and Steve brought out 3, plus a gala.

Meta Party Game

Marty was the Meta Devil. Here is the Meta Party Game he mailed out:
Simple one this week. Play games that start with the letters M E T A. Any game title starting with one of those letters gets a point. Any game not starting with one of those letters does not count. Games starting with the word "A" or "The" or other such articles do count. Most points wins. Ties will be broken by whoever plays the most Tichu games. After that a winner will be chosen in some random manner by Russ.

Thanks to the explosive power of Atomic Chess, Dudley easily wins this Meta Game, and will design next week's Meta Game! Curiously, Acquire was the only other game played which earned any Meta Points. So much for M, E, and T.

Evening's Soundtrack

Landmark Music, Vol. 3
The Music of Erica Zann
Alanis Morissette, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Blue Oyster Cult, Cultosaurus Erectus
Hopelessly Devoted To You, Vol. 4

The most recent 5 acquisitions in my CD collection (2 of which were free and one was $4). Cultosaurus Erectus was found cheap in the used bin and takes me back to 1980 on a little nostalgia trip. I saw BOC play live in a packed Madison Square Garden. Decades later, they came to Austin and played in some small club. Sic transit gloria mundi. I have this one on vinyl still but hadn't played it in years... The music is still good fun 22 years later, and I rediscovered that the opening track Black Blade is one of the all-time great opening tracks on a rock album, and was co-written by Michael Moorcock.

Daniel is the Devil! William is Vice-Devil. Alex is Vice-Vice-Devil. I am Vice-Vice-Vice-Devil. Perhaps Daniel and Alex will rule RussCon as father and son.
