I'm primarily interested in improving my basic drawing skills, but I've also started doing a little computer art. www.wetcanvas.com is a nice site with all sorts of art info and tutorials, including a beginner's tutorial on making computer paintings. Here are my first computer paintings, all done with the paint & smudge tools within Gimp:

A sunset. Or is it a nuclear explosion? I did this one soon after finding the wetcanvas tutorial.
