Meta Game

William was the Meta Devil and mailed out the following Meta Game:

The Metagame this week will involve letters. Letters that are made into words that are made into a sentence.

It's because Reading is Fundamental.

There will be prizes. Valuable prizes.

Woo hoo!

Further explanation appeared:

The object is to make the most amusing sentence.

All players will start with a basic pool of letters. They will be able to add letters as they play (and win) more and more games.

The basic pool will consist of the letters:

R,U,S,S,C,O,N and the letters in the player's first name (either their commonly used nickname or their given name).

[So Marty could use M,A,R,T,Y or M,A,R,T,A,N,G. J.P. could use J or he could use J,O,H,N.]

After a player finishes a game, letters will be added to their pool.

First, all players add the letters of the name of the game they just finished to their pool. For purposes of this rule, only published games are eligible.

The person who finished in last place (or those who tied for last) will then add one letter (of their choice) to their pool for each of the players who ranked higher than they did in the game.

The person who finished next-to-last then adds one letter (of their choice) to their pool for each of the players who ranked higher than they did in the game. In addition, the player may copy any/all of the letters in the pool of the player who ranked lower than they did in the game and add those letters to their pool.

The person who finished ahead of the person who finished next-to-last then adds one letter (of their choice) to their pool for each of the players who ranked higher than they did in the game. In addition, the player may copy any/all of the letters in the pool of the players who ranked lower than they did in the game and add those letters to their pool.

Continue for all of the players in the game.

In constructing a sentence, the letters in the pool can be used only once.

So if a pool has the letters D, G, I, L, O, W, the word [glow] can be constructed, but not the word [goodwill].

The addition of letters to a pool cannot occur until all players in the game have finished the game.

The accrual of letters ends at 10:45 pm.

The judging of sentences will take place at 11:00 pm.

The composition of all of the letter pools is public knowledge.

Winners will be determined by popular vote.

You must be present to play and to win.

There will be prizes. Woo hoo!

This ended up becoming cumbersome at a geometric rate as players acquired more and more letters to keep track of! A half-dozen sentences were submitted. In order of winning the vote, the prizes chosen were:
JP = gift certificate of unknown value
William = gift certificate of unknown value
Ben = Meta Devil
RussW = fava beans and a nice chianti

So Ben is the Meta Devil and will design next week's Meta Game!
