NewsWe had an international RussCon of sorts, with Jeffles visiting from Paris, a postcard from Matt in Ghana, a Latin American meta game, and Indian music for the evening's soundtrack. Jeffles was deeply touched and excited to get his ticket (and ticket stub graciously supplied by JimC) to see Attack of the Clones which has been clothespinned to my chandelier all summer. Also Ben is back (from California, if I recall, which some might argue is a foreign country.) The Triangle Classification Report has been updated with more info about some specific implementations and I added DaveB's implementation to the mix (which had been erroneously omitted). JP notes that the copy of Ra (owner unknown) has missing pieces.

Ok, I finally played the Latin American themed Puerto Rico, and I see what all the fuss is about. A cool game indeed. I liked it enough to play a second time in the same evening, even though the first game took 2 hours. (The second, with 3 players, took less than an hour.) It is one of those neat games with lots of different strategies and options, and it is almost completely pure skill (only one element of chance exists) but doesn't immediately feel that way, due to the great variety of things that can happen.
Some of us assumed Cartagena was set in Europe, but it turns out it's in Latin America. Exactly where in Latin America is still unclear... This game of Cartagena had one of the largest bursts of pirates running directly from the start space to the boat I can recall, with about a half dozen taking the fast track to freedom in a row! The prison guards must have been sleeping!
It was good to have an excuse to play Titicaca again. I suppose I can't take too much pride in winning since Daniel, PJ, and Jeffles were all newbies. It's a cool weird game I recommend checking out. Like Puerto Rico, it is almost pure skill; the only luck is in simultaneous auction bids.
Meta GameDaniel was the Meta Devil. Here is the Meta Game Daniel mailed out:
(I wondered exactly what defines "Latin America". I guess this site defines what Latin American countries are: http://lanic.utexas.edu/subject/countries/, which seems to be pretty much everything in North and South America except USA and Canada... Various tasty Latin American foods were brought, and lots of Latin American themed t-shirts worn, plus Whendy's Latin American style dress. Daniel & I tied for the most meta points (7), and unsurprisingly I left my house later than he did, so I am this week's Meta Devil and will design the next Meta Game! |
