News

lotrZack returned from China; sadly he never got to learn go, but he did bring a cheapass bootleg LOTR DVD, which is funny since I just recently finally got a DVD player in my computer and had borrowed DVDs from coworkers the same day to test it out. Note that this LOTR stars Een Micolen and Kate Branchtt! Truly stupe

ndous entertainment! It works in my computer, too, so cool. My sound card sucks, but that's another issue...

He also brought RussCon a chinese chess or shogi set (dang it, I can NEVER remember which is which of those two games, probably since I don't know how to play either one! :) Thanks!

The mysterious lost and found gray sweatshirt/coat thingie also turned out to be Zack's.

Note there will be no RussCon on Wednesday August 7 since I'll be at the Go Congress.

The Tick was short and silly. It was played, along with Powerpuff Girls and Muggins (ages 4 and up), for the meta points I think.

To my surprise, I found that Trumpet had been played twice before at RussCon.

El Caballero is a game I'd wanted to play for over a year, ever since I heard it compared to Carcassonne (tile-playing map-building game). It is kind of strange but enjoyable. I managed to pip Daniel, winning by one point, which of course increased the enjoyment!

Munchkin looks amusing. From what I have heard and observed, it probably doesn't have great replay value, but it looks like a game to try at least once. Great fun flavor text and art.

As is our frequent custom, we played Bluff as the evening wound down, and not finding my copy, we opened Zack's imported copy from China! It has better cover art. The dice and board are also surprisingly... orange.

Meta Game

Daniel was the Meta Devil. Here is the all ages Meta Game he mailed out:
Keep it simple...

Score for playing
1 Metapoint for each game that lists ages 12+
2 Metapoints for each game 10+
3 Metapoints for each game 8+
4 Metapoints for each game 6+
5 Metapoints for each game with a minimum age less than 6

Score for winning
the same points as for playing are given to the winner.

Score for bringing
same as for playing but the owner of the game scores additional Metapoints for each game of his that gets played each time it gets played.

Example, So Daniel wisely chooses to bring the very popular Star Wars Epic Duels, He gets his friends Russ, Dan and William to play. Russ, Dan and William would score 3 points (as SWED is ages 8+) and Daniel would score 6 (3 for playing and 3 for owning), in addition the winner or in this case all players on the winning team would score an additional 3 points.

if it doesnt list an age range it scores no points
round to the next higher range (so ages 6 and 1/4 would round to 8+)

My spreadsheet says:
0 Dan
0 Fred
0 MarkH
0 MarkY
0 Steve
5 William
7 JimG
8 JP
8 JonathanC
10 Clayton
13 RussW
25 Dudley
28 Zack
29 Deborah
33 Whindy
67 Daniel
So Daniel is again the Meta Devil and will design next week's Meta Game! All those games of Fluxx (ages 8 and up) paid off!

Our Most Assiduous Reader will note that I have dropped the "Party" and just call this the Meta Game now, to agree with common usage in conversation about our Meta activities.

Evening's Soundtrack

Babes in Toyland, To Mother
Genesis, Nursery Cryme
Marillion, Misplaced Childhood
Sinead O'Connor, My Special Child
Jane Siberry, When I Was A Boy

It's another of those pesky meta soundtracks!

These are the new multiplicative ratings (see July 3 for details). Notice here that Steve won all 3 of his games, while Daniel won 6 out of 12; in the old additive system, Steve's win rating would have been higher, but the new multiplicative system takes into account that the probability of Steve winning the 3 games isn't as low as the probability of Daniel winning 6 of 12 games.

Daniel is again the Devil! Steve is the reluctant Vice-Devil! Deborah is Vice-Vice-Devil. Clayton is Vice-Vice-Vice-Devil. Whindy is the Generous Angel.
