Costume Contest

I was amazed, and yes, even touched (but not enough to weep openly) that so many people came in costume. Long time RussCon gamers may recall that past Halloween RussCons have received rather lackluster costume attempts (despite my exhortations). This year was remarkably different. I wore a gloomcookie goth chick black dress. I fully expected Jeffles to be the only one coming in costume, making my decision (at 6:66 pm) an easy one. Jeffles showed up, indeed costumed, resplendent in a purple skirt and blouse (with horrifying 80s-fashion big shoulder pads). But so did many others! Wendy wore her hand-crafted authentic Alice in Wonderland costume (which she made for last year's Halloween)! Fred had a brown furry fox suit! Mindy was the ever-popular Red Bear (Go Red Bear!) complete with red face paint (unlike not one but two other Red Bears: Chris and Susan). Dan was an excellent Karnakesque mind reader with large "Jiffy Pop" style silver turban. Jerrie squeaked in with a skeleton t-shirt I'm certain I've seen worn before, but hey, I'll count it! It was a costumed cornucopia from which I could not choose a "best one". So we voted! Ended up with a 4-way tie (Jeffles, Fred, Mindy, Wendy). I decreed they play a game at the table to decide the contest, and so it was done...

There are no pictures of these costumes. You Had To Be There...

The four costume finalists began with a game of Zirkus Flohcati to decide who the evening's Devil would be. I have no idea what Zirkus Flohcati has to do with Halloween, except maybe that the fleas are in costumes. Anyway, Jeffles was the official Devil, so I guess he was fated to be the preemptive costume Devil as well. Meanwhile people on the floor played Real Halloween Games!

We had an unusual 3-way tie for first place in Vampire!

Plague and Pestilence (aka Nuclear War in Medieval Times) is a natural Halloween game.

Dan brought Hell Rail; I was sad not to get a chance to play it, but it sounded entertaining as we overheard snippets of their table talk.

Web of Power might not sound like a Halloween game, but where there are webs, there are spiders, and spiders are Halloweeny... come on, work with me here! Anyway my performance in Web of Power was truly horrifying. I don't know how I can suck so badly at a game but still keep wanting to play it. I've come in last every time I play it at RussCon. The only way for me not to come in last is to play it at Great Hall Games with Alfred, who lets me come in second to last!

There was a game of Give Me The Brain, but whoever was recording it dropped the brain midway through writing in The Book. Oh well!

I found a silly little card game someone (Dan?) brought called I've Created A Monster, for ages 4 and up. It was actually more sophisticated than other games of that age range I've seen... but not by terribly much! Cute art. You try to get all 6 types of card (head, torso, arms, legs) to assemble your monster! Cute art.

We had an epic game of Kill Dr Lucky. As usual we were RoboRally robots and Dr Lucky was Nunzilla.

Brady brought the old Games Workshop classic DungeonQuest. This was a nostalgia trip for me, as I recall playing games of it with old slugtriber "Evil" Guy Hail. Astoundingly, in the first game all 4 of us escaped alive. William made a whole series of strategic errors, foolishly making it difficult for him to progress toward the treasure room at the center, but the rest of us all made it there and back out with plenty of loot. Then Matt followed in William's footsteps in the second game, tactically erring time and again in his tile draws, the poor sap. The rest of us made it to the center easily, and this time only Brady & I escaped with our lives. William and Matt dared to declare the game luck-based and bad, blaming their poor performance on the system instead of the superior tile-drawing skills of their opponents. This game rules! It rules so much I stayed up late playing the second game of it even though I had to wake up early the next morning for my art class.

Meta Party Game Results

Tim won last week and so was the Meta Party Devil! Here was the game he emailed out:

So, the idea is, each player gets one point for each scary impersonation he/she does for a game. Impersonation 100% of the time is not necessary, but one little try doesn't cut it. Let the other players be the judge. They may award an extra point for especially strange and disturbing renditions.

I'd like to have two lists of possible thingies to impersonate, one for use from 7:00 to 8:30, one for 8:30 to 10:00, and a freeform period after that.

My list so far, may be amended, contributions welcome:
Frankenstein
Casper
Scooby-doo
Kang
Marvin the Martian
Dracula

Vincent Price
Incredible Hulk
Alf
Cousin Itt
Wicked Witch of the West
The Count

Igor
Janet Lee
Beaker
Colombo
Hugo

*In asking you thusly to humiliate yourselves for my amusement, I would be remiss if I did not allow you to humiliate me too...

Unfortunately Tim, the creator and moderator of this game, was not feeling well and left early. His absence left a power void in the meta party game political structure which as far as I know was never filled, and so no real records were kept for the meta party game. Oh no, how can this be?!

This sad state of affairs led me to consider that a meta party game which requires frequent events or record keeping is harder to run. (Duh!) In this light, I'm going to do a totally different low-overhead meta party game for next week, which requires no conscious participation at all! This is the Mediocrity Game. I will find the median (not mean) rank and win ratings next week. Then whoever is closest to those is the Meta Party Devil! ("Close" means the sum of your two distances from the medians is smallest.) In the case of ties, I will break it arbitrarily, since I wield the Russ Power. This will give us a new Meta Party Devil next week who will think of something more creative than the Mediocrity Game.

Stephanie (a friend of Carly) came and played one game, winning Durch die Wueste; playing and winning only one game is the Brady Maneuver and makes one ineligible for being Devil. One must play more than one game to be Devil, so hopefully Stephanie will return next week to win more games. Second-highest ranking player Jeffles is therefore the Devil! Then Steve, Dan, PJ, ... I win the Dedicated Award.

Fred and Wendy got the exact same rank and win ratings as each other, so there's probably some weird Alice in Wonderland furry fox character synergy thing happening there.
