15 of us played 18 games.

I attended my first precinct convention on Tuesday and will be a delegate in the county convention; anyone interested in this little adventure can read more. And tonight I will be going to a hearing to try to stop the LCRA from chopping a bunch of trees in my neighborhood greenbelt. It seems I am becoming a bit of an activist in my period of underemployment.

Marty brought Pick Picknic, a simple game involving simultaneous decisions of which of 6 pastures you'll visit each turn to collect corn (as a bird) or to eat birds (as a fox). It seemed reasonably fun, though involved a lot of luck and chaos. Thanks to Jeffles for his stirring reading of the flavor text during his reading of the rules.

I see Zertz the 2-player pure strategy game got played twice more. I should give it a try; I read the rules a couple weeks ago and it looks interesting.

The highlight of the evening for me was the new game Domaine, which is a Klaus Teuber design clearly based on his earlier Löwenherz. It has the same core idea of placing walls to enclose regions (aka domaines) (which contain exactly one castle), but the region scoring is much more elegant and improved. The card deck also has the same idea of successive sets of cards (A, B, C, D), each set shuffled within itself, so that the card distribution has a definite progression, but the mechanism of card play is quite different: no more auctions; you pay to play a card; and instead of playing, you may sell a card to the chancery to get more money, where it may be picked up by a player later instead of taking a card from the deck. In our game, I soon pulled out into last place... but as the game approached the end, I managed to wall off a large domaine, earning a lot of points, but simultaneously walling off a large domaine for the leader JP, which enabled him to win, but secured second place for me - probably the best I could hope for, given my situation, so I was happy. Anyway, I will certainly play this one again.

I finally broke my streak in Ark of the Covenant! Our Most Assiduous Reader will recall that I came in last every time I played this game (3 times!) but this evening, I am proud to say, I progressed to next-to-last place, edging out Clayton. Okay, maybe this doesn't sound like great progress, but, hey, baby steps.

Jeffles brought Banana Republic, which looked vaguely familiar to me, and sure enough I played it once 4 years ago (and apparently we didn't like it much). It was played once more 2001-07-18.

It would seem the go board got used for gomoku and pente!

MarkG and Matt are Co-Devils! MarkY and Whendy are Vice-Co-Devils. Then Marty and Fred. KevinU is the Generous Angel!

Meta Game

Jeffles was the Meta Devil and mailed out the following Meta Game:

So, for next weeks meta game: The New Game

Any person who comes to RussCon, but had not previously attended within the six weeks (Including people who had never attended) is eligable to win. Among those people, anyone playing a game never before played at RussCon earns a meta point. In case of a tie at he end of the night a coin will be flipped. Heads, the tallest tied player wins, tails the shortest wins.

Shortly thereafter, an update appeared!

Geez... the rules lawyers.

Already 3 emails asking what happens if noone new shows up. In this case, which I don't really expect, then the same meta game will continue until someone new does show up. Or Russ can overrule and create his own case. Or we'll play it by ear. If someone for instance, shows up in drag and insists on being called Dortmunder; then I'll allow this as a case of a "new" person.

And yes, this game is height biased... so am I. You got a problem with that? I just really have met VERY few people teller than me that I've ever liked... therefore I can conclude that tall people are not very likable. So if you don't like me I'm sorry... it's not my fault I'm tall.

Well, despite Jeffles predicting it would never happen, nobody new showed up, not even anyone who hasn't been here in 6 weeks. (The force is weak in this one. He also kept predicting I would draw a bent road tile in Carcassonne, which never happened.) I was hoping DaveB might show up, since I had just had an enjoyable lunch and chat with him before RussCon, but alas no. We did at least have several new games, Pick Picknic and Domaine; possibly also gomoku and pente, which have never been recorded before but possibly have been played.

So anyway maybe I'll overrule, or maybe this meta game will continue next week, or who knows. Stay tuned!
