News

Clandestine will be here in a week, on Friday February 1. Whendy is organizing a little birthday expedition for me... all are welcome; we'll be doing the Veggie Heaven dinner beforehand, then the early show, then perhaps over to Great Hall for gaming afterward. I expect we'll plan to be at Veggie Heaven on the drag across from Dobie Mall) around 6, then mosey up the street to UT's Cactus Cafe to get in line for the 7:30 show. If you definitely plan to meet us for dinner, let me know so we have a table headcount.

I'll just discuss the 4 early RussCon games that were played:

Manhattan is always good fun: nifty fiddly bits, and 4 scoring rounds which are usually quite close, which leads to much negotiating and debating over who's really winning. Sadly, everyone became convinced I was winning, so I got pounded down to last place.

I hadn't played Modern Art in quite a while. I think of it as the ultimate auction game since it has 5 types of auction in it. We had a very high scoring game and almost ran out of money.

Entdecker was, I believe, the next German game I bought after Settlers lo these many years ago. I love tile placement games. Entdecker is certainly in the same family as the beloved Carcassonne. Simpler terrain, more other rules.

Mississippi Queen was another early German purchase of mine. I never quite liked it as much as some German games (partly due to its infuriatingly ambiguous rules which seem straightforward till we start examining what they're really saying about turn order and about when you reveal the next river tile), but it's still a good one to play every now and then. It also turns out we played it wrong all these years and only recently learned that when you reach a finish hex, you don't have to have speed 1. (Speed 1 is only needed to pick up a passenger.) Apparently you can crash at full speed into the bank of spectators, wreaking bloody full steam havoc!

A reminder: please write and spell clearly when recording game results, make the scores and ranks clear, and remember last initials for people with common names, thanks! We had both Bobs here, and several confusing instances of just Bob instead of BobR or BobK recorded.

Meta Party Game

I was the Meta Devil. Here is the Meta Game I emailed out:
Meta Game: a 4th anniversary trip down memory lane

Earn 1 meta point each time you play a game which was played in one of the first 4 RussCons. (Note: the first RussCon had no Report written, but I can tell you that it had no games that weren't played in the 2nd through 4th RussCons.)

High score wins, of course.
Ties broken by distinct number of qualifying titles played.
Further ties broken by whoever has been coming to RussCon the longest.
(Gotta give those old-timers a slight edge.)
Further ties broken randomly.

Also earn a bonus meta point if sometime during the evening you hand me a note with your name and the theme of this week's Evening's Soundtrack. Woohoo!

As it turned out, I won with 4 meta points for playing Manhattan, Modern Art, Entdecker, and Mississippi Queen. I hoped to get a game of Loewenherz going, but no luck. Also several folks wanted to play Medici, but ironically there was no copy around. RoboRally and Montgolfiere would also have earned meta points. Other high scorers were Whendy (3 meta points); MarkY and Sea Biscuit (2 meta points). I was actually rather surprised that more folks didn't play any of these old favorites. (There has been some muttering lately about how Tichu is sucking some people's brains so they never play any other games any more...)

As for the bonus meta point for the Evening's Soundtrack, only 2 people guessed: Whendy and Dan. Dan came close in spirit ("The First RussCon Music Theme"), but the first themed soundtrack was September 2, 1998. In fact tonight's theme was the first soundtrack to be reported in a RussCon Report, from July 15, 1998. Yes, hard to believe now, but it took 6 months before I thought to list the soundtrack in a Report, and another couple months before I got the idea to make a common theme for the soundtrack...

Evening's Soundtrack

The evening's soundtrack included:
Mercury Rev "Boces"
Skunk Anansie "Paranoid and Sunburnt"
Traffic "John Barleycorn Must Die"
Chris Whitley "Living with the Law"
"Nordic Roots", a Scandinavian sampler anthology.

It's meta, of course.

A new superhero Phantom Patriot in the news. Apparently deranged from listening to too much Alex Jones, he commits trespassing and arson at a private club he believes is a human sacrifice conspiracy. Woohoo!
