23 of us. 20 games. We are in a high attendance wave lately. Occasional RussCon gamers Dawn, JeffS, and KevinT all made appearances! Woohoo! PJ returned from his Germany trip with 3 games, 2 of which have already seen RussCon play, but the third (Incognito) looks potentially cool.

ArmadilloCon last weekend was lowkey and low attendance, but we had fun in the boardgame room, and at the Saturday night dance. Thanks to my henchlings Sea Biscuit and Dawn.

William & Daniel & I saw U-571 which is now at the Wells Branch Discount Cinema. If you haven't seen this one yet, it's a good nonstop action film!

far eastern bottled water

The weird food of the week is this bottled water someone left that was apparently transported to Austin from the other side of the world. What's up with this?

Confidential to the mysterious Pop-Tart Box and Gal With Glass Dildo benefactor(s): Thanks, man!

Clandestine

clandestineClandestine, the great Celtic band out of Houston, will be playing the Cactus Cafe on UT Campus next Thursday August 31! Woohoo! I plan to do my usual dinner beforehand at 7pm at Veggie Heaven (on the west side of the Drag south of 20th) if anyone would like to join me. The show starts at 8:30 and costs $10. We get in line early because it's become a very popular show.
Also, several of you are interested in the California Guitar Trio, which will be at the Cactus September 8 & 9 with Tony Levin.

settlersI played Settlers at ArmadilloCon, and then reigning Devil Jayson wanted to play it at RussCon for the first time in a while. Anyone who hasn't played Settlers really should; it's the German game that started it all, and RussCon as we know it probably wouldn't exist if not for Settlers.

battle cryBrady & I played Battle Cry's Kernstown scenario in match mode. He won the first time 6 to 4, then we reversed sides and I won 6 to 5, so again he pipped me by one for the match. Such a nifty game. If you are interested in trying historical wargames but are put off by the classic style complex wargames, you should give this neat simple game a try. It's designed by Richard Borg, who also did Bluff, so that should give a hint that it's not a terribly complicated game!

Strangely, Rotten Fish got played at ArmadilloCon and then at RussCon after a long gap as well. It's a good quick simple game with simultaneous decision revelation, not to mention cute little fishies.

Evening's Soundtrack

Dick Dale & his Del-Tones, The Best of
The Doors, The Doors
King Crimson, In the Court of the Crimson King
Ennio Morricone, A Fistful of Dollars
Ravi Shankar's Festival from India

Music from the sixties! At ArmadilloCon the live band Ax Nelson mostly played old sixties rock/folk/blues stuff. I felt there was a lot of sixties music they ignored!

Jayson was a mere Co-Vice-Vice-Devil last time, but now he is The Devil! Tim is Vice-Devil, and Clayton is Vice-Vice-Devil.

Jeffles wins the rare and coveted Extra Average Award for having both his ratings be 0!
