Hello Friends: I wanted to let you all know about a performance action in response to the war in Iraq that I am leading with Katie Pearl (my close collaborator who is directing Steve Moore's NightSwim in the New Works Festival). The event takes place this Sunday afternoon, April 6. The event does overlap with some of the New Works Festival shows, however we are organizing it so that people can participate for as long or as short of a time period as they like. Please join us. Or, if you decide to simply drive by and see the action, it should only take about 5 minutes....please read on for the complete details... Austin friends, This Sunday April 6, we are planning a performance event in The Grove. We are inviting you to participate. This performance action is in part our effort to create a meaningful, public response to the war. It is also a way for us to revisit our first artistic collaboration and to again draw attention to this beautiful, largely unseen place. The event will take place in the grove of trees on the E side of Lamar, just south of San Gabriel (which is the street South of 29th). It is designed to be seen by the passengers of passing cars. The entire piece will occur over a 5 hour period on Sunday, from 12-5. YOUR PARTICIPATION WILL LAST AS LONG OR AS SHORT AS YOU CHOOSE. It does not matter what you wear, but be aware that it will probably get hot in the sun and maybe you should put on sunscreen. We will have water there for you for when you finish. What to do: 1. At any time between 12 and 4:00 on Sunday, come meet me and Lisa at the bottom of San Gabriel St --where it intersects with Lamar. (There is a lot of parking in that neighborhood between Lamar and 29th, so drive and park on the street, then walk down to find us.) 2. we will give you a white blindfold. 3. you will then walk slowly into the grove, choose a spot you like, and put on your blindfold. 4. your task now is simply to remain there, sitting or standing, facing any direction, with your blindfold on. listen to what is around you. feel the air on your skin. breathe. remain silent. 5. stay there for a long time. maybe a 1/2 hour. maybe 1 hour. maybe more. 6. when you are satisfied, remove your blindfold and slowly and carefully tie it around the tree closest to you-- the trunk or a branch, any place you want to put it. 7. leave the grove the way you came, slowly and silently (how slowly can you travel?) Lisa and I will remove the white ties later. Our goal is to create a public action that can be interpreted freely by both participants and viewers. We are not intending to make a definitive statement about our personal beliefs. We intend rather to construct a template of action that is rich and open in its symbols, allowing for an important, personal experience on the part of the participants while a compelling visual statement is created for the people driving by in their cars. *please forward this email to anyone who may be interested*
